“In November 2022, Evelyn Rose Benson, RN, received the NFPs Leadership Award in recognition of her 80-year nursing career and many accomplishments. Many colleagues know Evelyn through her publications and educational activities. I am honored to know her since the 1970s when I was a graduate student in community health administration. The textbook: Community Health and Nursing Practice, co-authored by Evelyn and Joan Quinn McDevitt, was my textbook and Evelyn was my mentor during my three-semester community health practicum at the VNA of Chester.
“Evelyn and my paths crossed many times during the years and we became friends as well as colleagues. We both love nursing history and were active with the Museum of Nursing History in Philadelphia. Our mutual membership in the PA State Nurses Association and support of the Nursing Foundation of PA continue today. Evelyn is 99 years young in 2023 and she continues her involvement with nursing students at the retirement community where she lives. The NFP’s Evelyn Benson Leadership Scholarship, named in her honor, is a well-deserved tribute to a nursing leader!”

In addition to being a nurse, Evelyn is also an author. Her book As We See Ourselves: Jewish Women in Nursing was published in 2001.
